While growing up, I became interested in healthcare, and graduated with degrees in Nursing and Nutrition in 1985. As a Registered Nurse, I worked in the areas of psychiatry, med-surg and dermatology, and started taking courses in Alternative and Complimentary Medicine.
In 1995-9, while battling a host of physical health problems, my interests shifted again toward chronic disease causes and lack of western medicine's ability to cure these illnesses. I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia late 1998, and became unsatisfied with having to take additional prescription medication to counteract side effects of necessary medications. I had even been desperate enough to halt the ravages of the disease to take a prescription medication whose main side effect was blindness, with no guarantee that the medicine would stop the increasing disability and organ failures.
Fortunately, while receiving physical therapy I was introduced to the benefits of massage by a physical therapist who had also been trained in massage. She recommended additional massage therapy, so I started seeing a massage therapist on a weekly basis. My strength slowly returned as did my range of motion and joint mobility. Still having problems with fluid retention from the various prescriptions, I was referred to a chiropractor. Also a kinesiologist, this doctor used food allergy testing, supplements, biological terrain mapping and other things to increase my wellness, reduce the amount of daily pain with movement, and reduce the hypermobility in my joints. By reducing prescription meds, my body was no longer too acidic to heal completely and I started becoming well. My interest became focused on alternative medicine and after 2 years of work, research, and a lot of trial and error, I was given completely clean bills of health in 2003 from all of the 11 MDs/specialists I used to see on a monthly basis.
I remain healthy, using primarily nutrition and supplements as needed, while taking care of my body and spirit using the techniques in which I have been trained.
Deborah Austin's license is current with the Texas State Board of Nursing. She graduated from Trinity College of Natural Health, earning her Doctor of Naturopathy in February, 2006.
